“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16).
This wonderful text refers to the greatest gospel preacher of all time — the apostle Paul; the greatest Person of all the ages — the Lord Jesus Christ; the greatest power in all the universe — the power of God; and the greatest purpose in eternity — the salvation of the souls of mankind.
1. THE PREACHER OF THE GOSPEL – “For I am not ashamed”
The apostle Paul is the speaker. He was born in Tarsus, educated in Jerusalem at the feet of Gamaliel, converted on the road to Damascus, and received the revelation of the gospel directly from Christ in Arabia. Paul experienced the grace of the gospel. He believed it. He knew what it did for him. He knew what it could do for others. He was ready to preach it everywhere. He was not ashamed of the gospel, and wanted everyone to hear the glorious good news of Jesus Christ.
2. THE PERSON OF THE GOSPEL – “Of the gospel of Christ”
The Lord Jesus Christ is the supreme Person of the gospel message. He is the heart of the gospel. In fact, He is the gospel! The message of the good news of salvation centers in Christ. He is the Object of our faith. He is the only One Who can save. Jesus Christ alone is the Savior of the world (I John 4:14).
3. THE POWER OF THE GOSPEL – “For it is the power of God”
This is the same power that created the heavens and the earth, that placed the sun, moon and stars in their places and keeps them there. It is the same power that kept the fiery furnace from harming the three Hebrew children, and the lions from devouring Daniel. It is the same power that saved Paul from sin and raised Jesus from the dead. It is the same power that is saving and changing lives today. It is the power of the living God.
4. THE PURPOSE OF THE GOSPEL – “Unto salvation to every one that believeth”
The purpose of the gospel of Christ is to provide salvation, deliverance from sin, to all those who will believe upon Christ and be saved. It is to provide eternal life as a free gift. It is to save the soul from eternal destruction, but also to save the life for consecration in service to God. The gospel of Christ not only provides abundant life here and now, but eternal life and everlasting joy in heaven with the Father.
5. THE PEOPLE OF THE GOSPEL – “To the Jew first, and also to the Greek”
The gospel of Christ provides salvation for all people. Christ died to save all men of all nations of the earth, and in the end it will be so according to Revelation 7:9, where we see people from every nation, people group and language stand before the Lord in heaven. Jesus is an equal opportunity Savior!
With such a glorious gospel as this, it becomes the duty and the privilege of all who believe it and love it to proclaim it — by life and by lip! It should be proclaimed both far and near. It should be proclaimed with zeal and with power. Don’t be ashamed of the gospel. Jesus Saves! Let the whole world know!
