“Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it” (John 2:5b).
At the wedding feast in Cana of Galilee, the mother of Jesus spoke to servants in the words of this text. What they did, they were doing for Jesus. Today the Lord calls on all believers to serve for Him and His kingdom. In the words of four other Bible texts we will see the method, the motive, the means, and the manner of service for Jesus Christ.
1. THE METHOD OF SERVICE
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22).
In these words James admonishes believers to serve the Lord. Some think about service but never get around to it. Others imagine, plan, and expect to do good things, but real servants of Christ actually perform good works for Him. They are doers of His Word, not dreamers. They are performers of His will, not pretenders. Service performs. Service accomplishes.
2. THE MOTIVE OF SERVICE
“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).
In these words the apostle Paul states the highest motive for Christian service. Some might serve for selfish purposes, or to promote the welfare of their family or their friends, but the ideal is to do all to the glory of God. If our service is for the glory of God, it will also be for the good of man. Labor will lift when it is done for the glory of God. This high motive should dominate all activities of the life of every believer.
3. THE MEANS OF SERVICE
“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus…” (Colossians 3:17a).
It was in the name of Jesus and through faith in His name that Peter and John healed the lame man at the Beautiful Gate of the temple in Jerusalem (Acts 3:16). When those early disciples prayed that many signs and wonders might be done in the name of Jesus, the place where they were assembled was shaken, they were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the Word of God with boldness (Acts 4:31). The greatest means Christians have for accomplishing great things for the church and for God’s kingdom is in the name of Jesus. There is power in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
4. THE MANNER OF SERVICE
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men” (Colossians 3:23).
This is the manner in which all work for the Lord should be done. It should be done with enthusiasm. We should enter into His service in a hearty and cheerful manner. There is no place for laziness in the service of the Lord. His service deserves all the energy and devotion we can muster. We must put our heart into our service for Christ, realizing that it is for Him. We should serve heartily, in His name, and for His glory. Why? Because we love Him!
“I cannot work my soul to save, for that my Lord has done. But I would work like any slave, for the love of God’s dear Son.” – Unknown
