What Happens When We “Wait” on the Lord

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, not faint” (Isaiah 40:31).

In Isaiah 40:31, it tells us what happens to people who wait on the Lord. Many of you may understand that word “wait” really means trust. Trusting God can sometimes become a cliché used in conversation but never relied upon in daily living. In verse 29 of the same chapter, the Bible tells us, “He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.” Today, I want you to know that God is not too great to care about you. So, the question is: What happens to those who wait or trust in the Lord?

Those who wait on the Lord will have an inward strength. The verse says your strength will be renewed. God wants us as Christians to rely on him, whatever we are doing. As we look to Him, He will give us the strength to continue even when we are tempted to give in. There are times when we want to chuck in the towel, yet when we look to our Lord, He will renew our strength.

The devil will come to you with his temptation, but remember the words of I John 4:4: ”Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.” Daniel had that inner strength from God. That is the reason he openly prayed and honored God with the inward man!

When you wait on the Lord, not only will you develop an inward strength; you will have an upward strength! The Bible tells us, “They shall mount up with wings as eagles.” Too many times, Christians want to live in the muck and mire of this world, instead of setting their thoughts and affections on things above (Colossians 3:2).

They will also have an outward strength! They shall run and not be weary. The Bible tells us that living for Christ is much like a race. It takes patience, sacrifice, and determination. Jesus humbled Himself, yet He wasn’t weak! The challenge for many believers is living out what they truly believe in their hearts. Have an outward strength that runs a faithful race!

Lastly, you will have an onward strength. They shall walk and not faint! In other words they keep going! In Galatians 6:9, we are told, “We shall reap if we faint not.” We have not crossed the finish line in our lives, so until then, we keep going and don’t quit! Unfortunately, it is all too easy to quit. The world system, our flesh, and spiritual warfare take their toll on us. That is the very reason we must put our trust in the One Who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). Today, if you are going through a difficulty and you find it hard to keep going, place your trust in the faithful character of God and He will strengthen you!
