Unwrapped Gifts, Untapped Joy

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17).

One of my wife’s favorite Christmas traditions is wrapping gifts, and she is very good at it. She loves picking the appropriate wrapping paper and adding a complimentary bow, gift tag or other decorations. She enjoys trying to pick patterns and colors of gift wrap that match the person receiving the gift. In some cases, she finds a gift box or gift bag for a present that couldn’t be wrapped otherwise.

You may not share her affinity for wrapping and adorning gifts, but consider for a moment other gifts that are specially wrapped and set before you; gifts that are designed to match the people receiving them. God, in His infinite wisdom, has placed within each of His children something very special — a talent, an ability, a God-given gift. He has endowed us with certain spiritual gifts to carry out His purposes.

“Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us…” (Romans 12:6a).

“Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit” (I Corinthians 12:4).

“As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (I Peter 4:10).

Have you opened the gift He has placed within you? If not, what better time to discover and unpack your spiritual gift (or gifts) than during Christmas! If you have or when you do, then use it! Don’t leave it sitting in the box or “on a shelf.” God gave it to you with a special purpose in mind. If you fail to use the gift God has given you, not only will you be robbed of a blessing, but others will as well. May each of us be faithful to employ those spiritual gifts He has given us in serving one another and being good stewards of God’s manifold grace.

This year, as you open presents under the tree, remember the gifts God has given to each of His children, and pray that none of them will go unwrapped. Unwrapped gifts = untapped joy!
