It’s that time of year again. December has come and with it all the joys of the Christmas season. But what is the real meaning of Christmas? As Charlie Brown might ask, “Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?”
Suppose you were to take someone who had no knowledge whatsoever of the real meaning of Christmas and had them walk through a local mall. What might they think Christmas was all about? As they walked through the mall, what might they see?
Busy shoppers running from store to store with packages in hand. Signs in store windows designed to entice shoppers to come in and find the perfect gift for the lowest price offered anywhere. Overhead music streaming from the speakers announcing that Santa Claus is coming to town. Banners and signs everywhere wishing people a “Happy Holiday” and “Season’s Greetings.” In the center of the mall they might see a rather heavy man with a long, white beard and a red suit posing for pictures with neatly dressed children, while another person is offering the parents an opportunity to purchase those pictures.
Is this what Christmas is all about? they might ask themselves. What would you tell them? What, after all, is the real meaning of Christmas? It is certainly much more than lights in the windows, gifts under the tree, stockings hanging in the living room, cards in the mail, parties and food, Santa and reindeer, candy canes, and decorations. What is Christmas really all about?
Christmas is the celebration of the greatest gift ever given – the greatest gift of all – the gift of God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us, “But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons” (Galatians 4:4). In the midst of all the traditional elements of this season, let’s not forget the real reason for the season. Christmas is all about the Lord Jesus Christ, who came to be the Savior of the world, for all who will put their faith and trust in Him!
