The Good News of the Resurrection!

Many people at this time of year are excited about Easter eggs, Easter baskets, bunny rabbits, and new clothes, but Christians, remember that it’s the Savior’s resurrection that we celebrate. Praise God, He is alive!

Paul tells us in I Corinthians 15:1-2 that this is the Gospel that he preached and the Gospel by which we are saved…

“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the Scriptures” (I Corinthians 15:3-4).

I cannot quote here everything in that great resurrection chapter of I Corinthians 15, but here is the evidence. Paul, by divine inspiration, says that Jesus was seen by Cephas (Peter), then of the other apostles. Then more than five hundred saw Him at the same time, and Paul said that most of them were still alive when he wrote this and could give testimony. Then Paul said, “He was seen of me also” (v.8), which happened on the road to Damascus (Acts 9).

The “Gospel,” which means “good news,” is the blessed truth that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again. There is nothing in the Bible about any other gospel but this saving Gospel. In fact, if anyone preaches anything else and calls it “the Gospel,” Paul said to let him be accursed (Galatians 1:8-9). There is no Gospel unless it is “according to the Scriptures.”

Paul wrote, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16). There is no way to be saved apart from the Gospel. In II John 9 we are told that one who does not abide in this doctrine of Christ is not saved.

There are false teachers who speak of a “spiritual” resurrection. Jesus rose bodily! Joseph’s tomb is empty! Jesus is alive today and sits at the right hand of the Father, ever living to make intercession for those who know Him and love Him. The hymn writer expressed it this way:

“Up from the grave He arose, With a mighty triumph o’er His foes;
He arose a Victor from the dark domain, And He lives forever with His saints to reign.
He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!”
(Robert Lowry, 1826-1899)

Thank God that He arose! There ought to be a hallelujah in the heart of every Christian. Jesus Christ is alive, He ever lives to make intercession for us, and He is coming again to receive us unto Himself. Yes, indeed, the resurrection of Christ is “good news.”
