Our Service for Jesus Christ

"Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it" (John 2:5b).
At the wedding feast in Cana of Galilee, the mother of Jesus spoke to servants in the words of this text. What they did, they were doing for Jesus. Today the Lord calls on all believers to serve for Him and His kingdom. In the words of four other Bible texts we will see the method, the motive, the means, and the manner of service for Jesus Christ. 1. THE METHOD OF SERVICE
"But be ye doers of the … Continue Reading ››

Good News for Every Christian

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ" (Ephesians 1:3).
With so much bad and depressing news happening in our world, how about a little good news, dear Christian? Ready? Our sins are forgiven. God is our Father. Jesus is our Friend. The Holy Spirit is our ever-present Comforter and Teacher. The Word of God is our guide. The family of God is our kin. The past with its sin is … Continue Reading ››

We Were Made for Relationships

"For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself" (Romans 14:7).
As we study the New Testament images of the church, we quickly begin to realize the fact that we cannot live the Christian life in isolation. There are to be no "Lone Ranger" Christians, and even the Lone Ranger had Tonto! As Christians, we belong to each other, we affect each other, and we need each other. In a society that screams, "Look out for number one" and "It's all about me," … Continue Reading ››

57 Cents that Made History

Many years ago now, a sobbing little girl stood near a small church from which she had been turned away because it was too crowded. When the pastor of Temple Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Russell H. Conwell, asked her why she was crying, she replied that they could not let her into the Sunday School because there was no more room. He said that he would take her in, and he did so, telling her that one day they should have a room big enough … Continue Reading ››

Encourage Others to Look to Jesus

John Egglen had never preached a sermon in his life. Never. Wasn't that he didn't want to, just never needed to. But then one morning he did. The snow left his town of Colchester, England, buried in white. When he awoke on that January Sunday in 1850, he thought of staying home. Who would go to church in such weather? But he reconsidered. He was, after all, a deacon. And if the deacons didn't go, who would? So he put on his boots, hat, and coat and … Continue Reading ››

God Uses Ordinary People

For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should … Continue Reading ››

Taking Care of Business

In the book of Luke, there is an interesting passage of Scripture telling us about a master who went away and what he expected of his servants in his absence.
He [Jesus] said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.  (Luke 19:12-13).
"Occupy" is a word we use a little differently today from the way it was … Continue Reading ››

Thinking About Things

Circumstances and people can rob us of our joy, but so can things; and it is this "thief" that Paul deals with in Philippians 3. In Philippians 3:18-19, he describes professed Christians who "mind earthly things." Then in Philippians 3:20 he describes the true believer who has his mind on "heavenly things." It's been said that, "some Christians are so heavenly-minded they are no earthly good." However, I have found the opposite to be generally true today. Unfortunately, some Christians are so earthly-minded that they are … Continue Reading ››

He Knows the Way That I Take

"But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold" (Job 23:10).
The following poem was written by Dr. Leslie Greening:

He Knows the Way That I Take (Job 23:10)

Suppose the Lord asked US to choose the path That we wished to tread through life; I guess that we would always choose a sunlit road Far away from the sound of strife.

We would want no clouds to darken our way, Nor a shade of anxious care; But … Continue Reading ››

Experience God’s Peace in 2021

As we come to the end of what has been called "a year of unprecedented times," I'm sure that all of us are thankful for the Lord's continued mercies on us. When we entered the year 2020, so many people described it as being "the year of perfect vision," but eleven months later it is evident that many developed vision problems! It seems that we cannot see things afar off or even up close; everything has been blurred. But while the world frets … Continue Reading ››
