Not many years ago, the U.S. Department of Transportation estimated that there were 19,000 accidents and as many as 6,000 deaths on America's roadways due to "blind spots" in a driver's vision. Simply put, a blind spot is an area that drivers think they can see, when in reality they cannot. Blind spots are dangerous on the road, but even more dangerous in a church.
All too often, a local church will have a serious … Continue Reading ››
For over 23 years, our church has consistently used the Faith Promise Plan for missions giving. This has enabled us to give far and above any amount had we given the customary 10% of our general fund to missions like many churches do. If we currently "tithed" on our general fund to missions, our giving would amount to about one-fourth of what we receive through Faith Promise. In other words, we are able to give four times as much money to missions using the Faith … Continue Reading ››
"In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also" (John 14:2-3).
Heaven is a place just as real as this place. Jesus called it a place and I get much comfort … Continue Reading ››
Since several people have made this statement to me recently, I thought I would change things up a bit and instead of writing a devotional this time, just share with you my thoughts on how to have an effective devotional life in God's Word. This involves a simple four-step process. I truly hope this helps some of you. Others of you who are already doing this, just keep it up!
First, find a place where you can be clear of distractions and interruptions, where you can … Continue Reading ››
"Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them" (Luke 15:1-2).
The late Dr. J. Vernon McGee liked to tell the story of a little girl who heard Luke 15:2 read from the pulpit. It was a cold London night, and she stepped, shivering, into the shelter of a church where a service was in progress. After the … Continue Reading ››
"As thou has sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world... Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest … Continue Reading ››
"Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage" (Galatians 5:1).
In an interview between Howard Hendricks and Chuck Swindoll, Dr. Swindoll gave some of his thoughts concerning legalism in the church. He begins by stating that areas that are clearly spelled out in Scripture do not fall under the heading of legalism:
"Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers" (Ephesians 4:29).
The Word of God tells us that believers must avoid communication that tends to tear down. Good communication edifies; that is to say, it builds up. It sends brothers and sisters away encouraged and joyful in the Lord.
But corrupt communication … Continue Reading ››
In Isaiah 43:18-19 it says, “18 Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.”
The New Year is always exciting for most. We say goodbye to the previous year and we “ring” in the New Year. Many times this involves some type of resolution or decision to make changes in … Continue Reading ››
It is hard to believe, but 2013 is almost over. Looking back over the year I am sure there are many joys, memories, and challenges we can reflect on. In II Timothy 4:7, the Apostle Paul writes, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” Paul is writing this at the end of his life reflecting on his work for the Lord. As we end this year and start another, the challenge for us is to Finish … Continue Reading ››
