“O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together” (Psalm 34:3).
This verse presents a clear call to sincere worship of the Lord. To respond to this call will enable souls to have strength to meet the difficulties of life. There are at least three lessons we can learn from this text:
1. THE PURPOSE OF WORSHIP – “O magnify the LORD”
The primary purpose of worship is to magnify the Lord, and to exalt His holy name. The Lord is certainly worthy of our worship. His character is good, His deeds are merciful, His acts are just, and His love is everlasting. We ought to reverence the Lord! Glorify the Lord! Magnify His works! Praise His holy name!
2. THE PEOPLE FOR WORSHIP – “with me”
The psalmist expresses his praise to the Lord and then calls for all people everywhere to join him in holy worship. Truly, all people should worship the Lord for His goodness, particularly those who are His saints! In other places in the Psalms the writer calls on all things to praise the Lord, even the heavens to be glad, the earth to rejoice, the fields to clap their hands and be glad, and the trees to sing for joy. Surely all men should worship and praise the Lord!
3. THE PLACE FOR WORSHIP – “and let us exalt His name together”
Togetherness calls for the unity of an assembly. It calls for people to assemble themselves together and worship the Lord in the unity of purpose. While it is a glorious truth that men and women may worship the Lord in any and all places, it is also true that there is a certain inspiration and celebration in a congregation worshiping the Lord together in the beauty of holiness. What a privilege is ours in this nation to join together in worship to our God! Let’s not take it for granted!
“God is to be praised with the voice, and the heart should go therewith in holy exultation.” – C. H. Spurgeon
