The Testimony of a Saved Man

“And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel” (Mark 5:20).

The man spoken of in this verse is the one we commonly refer to as “the maniac of Gadara,” out of whom Jesus had cast a legion of demons. In the preceding verse (v.19), Jesus told this saved man to go home to his friends and tell them how the Lord had compassion on him and had done great things for him. He departed and began to tell his story with great gladness. Please notice at least three things about this saved man’s testimony.

1. HIS TESTIMONY WAS SIMPLE

This brand new believer did not know much about theology, homiletics, language, history, etc., but he knew the Lord and he knew what Jesus had done for him. This simple message is what people need to hear. You don’t have to be a theologian to be a witness for Christ. Just tell your story! Tell others what Jesus has done for you! “Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy” (Psalm 107:2).

2. HIS TESTIMONY WAS SINCERE

It must have taken a very sincere witness to go to the people of Decapolis, a league of ten heathen cities east of the Jordan River, to tell them of the wonderful work of the Lord so the people would listen. No doubt the sincerity of this former wild man appealed to the people and is a shining example to all believers today.

3. HIS TESTIMONY WAS SUCCESSFUL

This man so stirred the people of this region that a great multitude desired to see and hear Jesus. In a few days when Jesus came this way again, thousands of people gathered about Him on the mountain and listened to Him all day. Eternity alone will tell the success of this one witness for Christ and his simple but sincere testimony to the saving power of the Lord.

So, dear Christian friend, keep witnessing for Jesus and telling your story. You may never see the results now, but one day you will. Just be faithful!
