Why? Just Because!

“I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live” (Psalm 116:1-2).

Let me ask you a thought-provoking question: “Why do you love the Lord?”

My mind begins to be in awe as I consider the reasons as to why I love the Lord. He sent His only begotten Son into the world, so that I could be saved. He lifted me out of the miry clay of sin and set my feet upon the solid Rock of Jesus Christ. He called me by His grace to serve Him. He has blessed me with spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus. He has given me material blessings as well…health to enjoy, a wife and family to love, and blessings too numerous to mention. He is a Friend that sticks closer than a brother. He will never leave me nor forsake me. He hears and answers prayer; He strengthens, guides, and protects. He is coming one day to receive me unto Himself. Besides all of that, there is so much more!

It is then that I begin to ponder a second question: “Why does the Lord love me?”

Honestly, I cannot come up with a single reason as to why the Lord of glory should love me. I certainly cannot earn or merit God’s love. At my best, I am still unrighteous, a sinner under the just condemnation of a holy and righteous God. There is no way that I or anyone else, for that matter, can earn the love of God. So why, then, does God love me (and you)?

“The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people; But because the LORD loved you…” (Deuteronomy 7:7-8a).

There it is! Why does the Lord love us? Just because He loves us! He has chosen to do so! He loves us “just because.”

What a wonderful thought that God loves me! I didn’t have to try to earn His love, win His heart, or convince Him of anything. He just loves me because He loves me! It is this realization that changes us, because in God’s Word we read, “We love him because he first loved us” (I John 4:19).

I could go on and on about why I love the Lord, but the basis of it all is that I learned long ago that He loves me with an everlasting love. He loves me in spite of the fact that I am not lovable. There is nothing I can do to make Him love me more. The love of God is unearned, unmerited, and unbelievable! By the way, have you told the Lord today that you love Him?
