Failure Isn’t Final with the Father

Passage: Mark 14:27-31, 66-72
Service Type:

In any great forest, some trees tower above all the rest and appear to be the very picture of strength and maturity. But often, they are rotten or hollow inside and actually very weak. I use this illustration because there are some people who think of themselves as spiritual giants, towering over others in the faith. They think they are the true standard of faith and often judge others. They boast, saying, "I would never do that." But in our passage today, Jesus deals with some men who saw themselves as big trees in the Christian forest. They would have said they were sold out for Jesus, but Jesus is about to reveal to them the fickleness of their human hearts.
